What We’re Doing

The Journalism & New Media class at the University of Denver is producing a series of multimedia stories designed to address the question, “How are today’s students affected by the global market - and by globalization in general?” This topic grows out of our concerns about the current global financial crisis and about U.S. policies that are influencing national security and international human rights decisions.
We see a lot of stories that are interconnected and related to this topic. We discussed job and loan prospects for young people just about to finish college, the overconsumptive lifestyle in the west that has contributed to environmental degradation and to a reliance on credit, the widening gap between rich and poor, the split in opinions between those who prioritize issues of defense and those who prioritize human rights, and our concerns that the recent crisis will contribute to an ever-deepening sense of alienation from the people elected to serve us in public office. Here’s what we’ve decided on so far:
1. Opinions on intervention among students: defense vs. human rights violations as way of mapping student views, split opinions, differing approaches to life
2. how to respond to the job markets
3. video essay on why young people distrust U.S. government
4. U.S. vs. Iran markets, or possibly negative perceptions of U.S., or military, or rich students and how privilege makes it possible to not care
